easy break action; 26" Oct. to round BBL; mfg.1863-65; very unique; SN#17439; NO FFL transfer needed; following info is from the seller; Edward Maynard 1813 to 1891; Dentist and inventor / Dentist to Washington elite; 1845 first patent of 23 in firearms 1851 developed a lever operated breechloading rifle with a metallic cartridge that he designed; The cartridge could be reloaded 100 times; Maynard Arms Company started in 1857 with subcontract to Mass. Arms Company to produce the rifles. Rifles were 35 and 50 caliber and could be produced with interchangeable smoothbore barrels; US Military – Coast Guard and Navy all contracted for 50 caliber rifles (total of 1200); Highly praised rifles but only 4 regiments were given the rifles during the Civil War. This was probably because the Mass. Arms Company burned down in 1961 and it was 1864 before rifles were being shipped again; About 3000 Maynard rifles were used by the Confederacy being purchased in 1860 and early 1861 / the first model Maynard was the official firearm listed in the Confederate ordnance Manuel; It was considered a highly regarded center fired rifle and was produced until 1890; More 50 caliber rifles are advertised for sale average price being high $2000,s while smaller caliber are slightly higher
